Trellech Walk - February 2018

10 February 2018

After meeting at the Monnow Bridge a short drive took us to Trellech, once the largest medieval village in Wales, to park at the 16th century Lion Inn.  Fifteen walkers and 5 dogs made their way to the Virtuous Well via a rather muddy field in damp conditions.  A short stretch of road led via woodland tracks to Catbrook and hence to Whitestone Forestry Commission and what would have been wonderful views of the Wye Valley but for low cloud.  On to Cleddon Shoots and Cleddon Hall, across heathland to Cotland, returning to Trellech to see Harold’s Stones (three Bronze Age standing stones),  Tump Terret (Norman motte and bailey castle) before an excellent pint and lunch at the Lion Inn.  About 6.5 easy miles in 3 hours with two coffee stops.
